Since 1994, all of my projects incorporate some aspects of green construction including non toxic or less toxic materials, resource efficiency and containment to protect owners and neighbors from what is released during construction. As an example, I recently completed a whole house renovation for a chemically sensitive person using non toxic materials selected by a health consultant, Marrilee Nelson. I serve on the Board of the Eco-Home Network in Los Angeles, California.

As a certified Bau-Biologist and Environmental Consultant since 1989, Mary Cordaro has worked with many hundreds of clients from around the country, on everything from simple paint choices to full scale, new construction and major remodeling specifications. Her first major residential new construction project was completed in 1991, when she consulted on both troubleshooting and solving contaminant problems, as well as specifying new building and interior materials. In addition to specifying healthy, ecological materials and systems, she has also worked with a large base of homeowners who have hired her to trouble shoot and solve indoor contaminant problems, resulting from and including moisture and mold, chemicals, and electromagnetic fields.

My firm has designed 10 buildings. Our most interesting project has been the development of an “eco-estate,” which has many buildings made of recycled materials. The first green project completed by my firm was in 2001. We have one LEED Accredited Professional, and everyone is a member of the USGBC.

We have completed one 2-story residence in Santa Monica (2005) that has many sustainable features including a photo-voltaic roof system that provides electricity, recycled and sustainable building materials, low emission finishes, a tankless water heater, drip irrigation system for drought tolerant landscaping, natural fiber carpeting, energy star appliances, sustainably forested wood cabinetry and low water usage plumbing fixtures. We have a second residential project in Mar Vista under construction that incorporates many “green” materials and energy systems as well. The major portion of our work is in corporate and healthcare interiors.
